So, you want to know how to be a cool mom? First off, let’s be real, us moms are already cooler than the other side of the pillow!
Sometimes we can get wrapped up so much in being a parent; we forget to be a friend as well.
How to Be a Cool Mom
Here are a few tips to help you balance the parent/friend relationship and become a cool mom.
Be Open to all Conversations
One of the primary connections that bonds friends is being able to talk to each other productively.
Be sure to always remember that regardless of the age of your children, they are their own people with their own thoughts, opinions, and feelings.
Make sure to consider this when having conversations with your kiddos.
They may be an extension of you and dad, but they still have their own characteristics that may need to be discussed and accepted by us parents.
Having an open-door policy early on will promote a lifetime of great conversations and sharing.
Let Go of the Leash
Trust is needed in all healthy relationships. As moms, we want to protect our children from everything; we want to know everything and try to fix all of it.
This will only hinder your children in the long run. The real world has no leash.
Allowing your children to make decisions (even if they’re the wrong designs), will teach them independence and how to pick themselves up.
This will not only make them stronger and give them pride in themselves but it will also let them know that you trust them and their decisions.
You may still have to fix things from time to time, but the lesson is bigger than the mess.
Clean Yourself Up
We all get wrapped up in parenting. Next thing you know, you’ve spent three days in with your favorite sweats and have the last two nights of dinner embedded into your shirt.
Take some time to focus on you. Take a shower and put on clean clothes. Looking good and feeling good go hand in hand.
Our children pick up on our energy. Showing yourself love shows your kiddos self-empowerment and self-love, something you can never have too much of.
Step Away from the Tech
Yes, you want to catch every moment of your kid’s life. Yes, you want to share every moment of your kid’s life.
Being able to step away from the technology is easier said than done, but is hugely important.
How can you have a conversation with your children while you have your face buried in a phone and they have a tablet?
Technology is great, but it has drawn us away from human interaction, even with our children.
Which do you think your child would prefer: You recording their performance with a phone in front of your face, or you waving arms and and cheering them on? Most likely, the latter.
Be Yourself
Being you is the easiest way to be a cool mom as well as build a relationship with your kids.
As moms, we are often worried about what other moms think of us and our parenting.
We put so much pressure on ourselves to be the cookie-cutter mom. We judge ourselves harder than anyone else. I’m here to tell you to be yourself!
Don’t worry about what someone has to say about you as a person and a mom. Learn to love who you are, your true self.
That’ll make you the coolest darn mom around.
